Former Odisha Assembly Speaker & Digapahandi MLA, Surjya Narayan Patro is no more. He breathed his last at a private hospital in Bhubaneswar on Saturday. He was 75.

He was a seven-time legislator and the sitting MLA of Biju Janata Dal representing Digapahandi Assembly Constituency. 

As the shocking news of Patro’s demise broke, messages of condolence started pouring in. 

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik mourned the death of the former Assembly speaker. 

“I am saddened to know about the demise of the former Speaker, minister, and senior leader of Biju Janata Dal, Surjya Narayan Patro. He will always be remembered for dedicating his life to the service of the people of Ganjam. His valuable contribution in organizing the Biju Janata Dal is an inspiration to all of us. This is an irreparable loss for Odisha politics and the party. May his soul rest in peace and my condolences to the bereaved family members,” read his post on social media. 

Odisha Governor Prof Ganeshi Lal took to social media to mourn the demise of Patro. The Governor expressed grief over the passing away of former Speaker of the Legislative Assembly Surjya Narayan Patro and expressed his condolences to the bereaved family. The Governor said that the departed leader will be remembered for his lifelong service as a people's representative.
 
BJP’s National Vice President, Baijayant Panda took to his X handle to condole Patro’s demise. 

“I am shocked and saddened to hear the news of senior politician, my friend and old associate, Surjya Narayan Patro’s demise. My deepest sympathy goes out to the bereaved family and may his soul rest in peace,” read Baijayant Panda's post. 

Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said Patro will always be remembered for his contribution to Odisha’s politics. 

“I am saddened and shocked to hear the news of the passing away of former Speaker and Digapahandi MLA Surjya Narayan Patro. He was a good friend and a loving person. His contribution to Odisha's political sphere will always be remembered. May the immortal soul rest in peace,” read Pradhan’s X in Odia. 

Chhattisgarh Governor Bishwabhushan Harichandan expressed deep grief over the demise of former Speaker Surjya Narayan Patro and said that he is deeply saddened to know about Patro’s demise. Late Patro performed all his duties as MLA, Minister, and Speaker sincerely, the governor said. 

Many leaders cutting across the party lines expressed their grief over the demise of Patro and extended their condolences to the bereaved family members.
