A doctor at Bhima Bhoi Medical College and Hospital (BBMCH) in Bolangir district was allegedly thrashed by the attendants and family members of a patient who died while undergoing treatment at the hospital on Monday night.

They alleged the on-duty doctor Rajendra Narayan Dalapati was in an intoxicated condition.

As per reports, Niku Barik from Kandhapalipara area in Bolangir had taken ill on Monday night and was brought to the BBMCH by his family. He needed blood.

Barik’s family alleged that despite arranging blood immediately and waiting for more than three hours with the blood packets, no doctor came to treat him resulting in the death of Barik.

Even the nurses on duty did not give him blood, they alleged.

Following Barik’s death, his family members searched for the doctor and allegedly found him in an intoxicated condition. They thrashed the doctor black and blue before the security guards rescued him.

Tension prevailed in the hospital after the attack. The hospital authorities are yet to make any statement in this connection.

Recently, scores of house surgeons of Bhima Bhoi Medical College and Hospital had staged a cease-work protest at the hospital premises over an alleged assault on a colleague on December 29, 2023.

They alleged a miscreant identified as Samir Badamali from Rajendrapara in Bolangir assaulted house surgeon Biswaranjan Sahu.

Two persons were arrested in this connection and forwarded to the court under NSA.

Superintendent of BBMCH, Dr Manasee Panda said if this allegation is true, it is really serious. “An inquiry committee comprising senior doctors has been formed to look into the matter. The report is awaited and action will be taken against those found guilty” she added.

On the other hand, Doctor Rajendra Narayan Dalapati dismissed the allegations against him.
