A ‘debt-ridden’ farmer reportedly ended his life by consuming poison over alleged crop loss in Bolangir on Monday.
As per reports, Santosh Jena, a farmer of Mudalsar under Larambha Police limits grew paddy and pulses on four acres of land.

He borrowed money from others for the crops. His family members alleged that since the paddy and green grams were damaged in pest attacks, he was in mental agony. Paying off the loans was something he was always worried about, his kin claimed.

As per sources, on Sunday, Santosh was shocked to see the damaged paddy, and there itself he consumed poison. He was admitted to Patana hospital. Late on Sunday night, he died while he was being shifted to Bhima Bhoi Medical College and Hospital in a critical condition.

Rajkumar Bohidar, a relative of the deceased said, “Santosh had grown paddy, mung, and vegetables. He suffered losses in farming. He was worried and consumed poison in the afternoon yesterday. He was admitted to Patana hospital. When we were taking him to Bhima Bhoi Medical College and Hospital, he died on the way.”

On being informed, police recovered the body and sent it for post-mortem. However, no comments have been received from the Police.
