Cuttack: The Cuttack RTO on Monday imposed Rs 10,000 penalty on a bus driver for allegedly driving the vehicle in an inebriated condition. The bus was reportedly en route Kolkata from Cuttack.

As per the challan issued by the Chauliaganj Police, the blood alcohol level detected in the breath of the driver, identified as Prafulla Chandra Muduli from Nayagarh, was 42 mg/100 ml, which was more than the permitted level.

The bus was detained at the police station and the owner, Ranubala Mallik was instructed to guard the vehicle at the Police Station at his own cost till the finalisation of the case.

It is pertinent to mention here that, the Odisha State Transport Department (STA) has decided to crack the whip on habitual violators of traffic rules at regular intervals. As per official sources, a massive crackdown on violators and strict enforcement of the amended Motor Vehicles (MV) Act 2019 will begin from January, 2021.

Clear instructions have been given to the enforcing authorities to adopt a zero tolerance approach for any kind of violation of the traffic norms in the State.

Earlier in the month, the Regional Transport Office (RTO) of Bhadrak on Tuesday had imposed a penalty of Rs 87,620 on a truck driver for allegedly violating the rules of amended Motor Vehicle Act.

While Rs 10,000 penalty was imposed on the truck driver for running the vehicle without a valid permit, the remaining Rs 77,620 fine was imposed for carrying goods beyond the permitted limit.
