Bolangir: Two newborn twin baby girls were found abandoned inside a toilet at Bolangir railway station in the wee hours on Sunday.

Both the babies, believed to be two-months-old, were found inside a bag, sources said. The matter came to light after a passenger spotted them inside the toilet and informed railway officials who subsequently reported the matter to the members of the Childline.

"When I entered the toilet I saw both the babies inside a bag, condition of one of them was critical," said Kapileswar, the passenger who first spotted the babies.

After reaching the spot at around 3 am today, the Childline officials rescued the babies and later admitted them to a hospital in critical condition.

"The condition of both the babies is now stable. But they need to be taken care of as they are just infants," said Dr. Surjit Nayak of Bolangir District Headquarters hospital.

It yet to be known under what circumstances the parents of the babies took such an extreme step. Senior police officials have started an investigation into the incident.

It is not for the first time that newborn girls have been abandoned in Odisha.

Earlier, a newborn girl was rescued by police near Siliamunda village at Pallahara in Angul district in March.
