Railway announces new travel rules for senior citizens, women and divyangs in major relief

Indian Railways has unveiled new initiatives to enhance travel experiences for senior citizens, women, and persons with disabilities, focusing on the allocation of lower berths. A designated quota for these berths has been assigned across various travel classes, ensuring that the needs of vulnerable passengers are met effectively.

In sleeper class, each coach typically offers six or seven lower berths, while 3AC coaches feature four or five. In 2AC coaches, the number ranges from three to four, depending on the total number of coaches in the train.

Automatic Allocation for the Elderly and Women

Under the new scheme, elderly passengers and women aged 45 and above, including expectant mothers, are automatically assigned lower berths at the time of booking, subject to availability. This initiative aims to ease their travel by reducing discomfort during the journey.

Moreover, Indian Railways has reserved specific quotas in express trains, such as the Rajdhani and Shatabdi services, for individuals with disabilities. Allocations include four berths in both Sleeper Class and 3AC, and four seats in Reserved Second Sitting (2S) or AC Chair Car.

Assistance and Accessibility Measures

If there are any lower berths vacant during travel, preference will be given to women, elderly passengers, and those with disabilities. Beyond berths, Indian Railways is also expanding infrastructural support at major stations to facilitate boarding and disembarking.

Amenities such as wheelchairs, specialised assistance counters, and ramps will be available, ensuring that passengers can access these services regardless of fare concession eligibility.

These efforts illustrate Indian Railways' enduring commitment to providing a safer and more inclusive travel experience, with particular attention to dignity and comfort for senior citizens, women, and persons with disabilities.
