The cynosure of all eyes, the race for Raisina Hill has started to elect India’s 15th President with NDA-supported Draupadi Murmu and Opposition candidate Yashwant Sinha contesting to adorn country's top-most constitutional post.

While all the necessary arrangements for the Presidential election are in place at the Parliament and Legislative Assemblies, the casting of votes has begun from 10 am and will continue till 5 pm.

The MPs/MLAs can cast their ballot either at the Parliament or the Legislative Assembly to decide the next President of the largest democracy of the world.

The vote is being held at room no- 54 of the Odisha Legislative Assembly.

Here are some facts about the election of the President of India:-

  • Notably, the values of votes of state legislators and MPs are 5,43,231 and 5,43,200 respectively.
  • The combined value is 10,86,431.
  • An electoral college of 543 Lok Sabha MPs, 233 Rajya Sabha MPs and 4120 MLAs will elect the next President of India.
  • While the value of the vote of MPs remains uniform across the states, the value of MLAs’ votes differs in proportion to the population of a state.
  • This is why the value of an Uttar Pradesh MP is the highest in the country.
  • While the value of an MP’s vote is 708, the same of an Uttar Pradesh MLA is 208.
  • The total number of MLAs in Uttar Pradesh is 403 and the total value of their votes is calculated at 83,824.
  • Similarly, there are 80 MPs in this state and the calculated value of their votes stands 56,640.
  • Similarly, in case of Odisha, the Legislative Assembly has 147 MLAs and the value of each MLA’s vote is 149. The total value of votes is 21,903.
  • Similarly, the total value of MPs of the state is 14,868.
  • If the MPs and MLAs vote values put together, the combined figure stands at 36,771.
  • The total vote values of states like Punjab, Uttarakhand and Goa are 13572, 4480 and 800 respectively.

If the support of parties are taken into consideration, NDA’s Presidential candidate Draupadi Murmu is way ahead of Yashwant Sinha.

Apart from BJP and it's NDA allies, BJD, YSR Congress, BSP, Shiv Sena, JMM, JDS, Akali Dal and TDP are extending their support to Draupadi Murmu.
