By 2024-25, the Department of Fisheries, Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) has envisaged to generate direct and indirect employment opportunities to about 55 lakh personnel in fisheries and aquaculture sector.

In a written reply in Rajya Sabha, Union Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying, Parshottam Rupala said that scheme aims to create direct and indirect employment opportunities for fishers, fish farmers, fish workers, fish vendors, and entrepreneurs, and enhance income of fishers and other stakeholders.

This will be done through the implementation of various targeted interventions in fish production, productivity, fisheries infrastructure and marketing, he said.

As per PIB report, the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Government of India is implementing the various schemes to supplement the efforts of the States/UTs for promotion and development of the animal husbandry, dairying and fisheries sector across the country.

These includes- Rashtriya Gokul Mission, National Programme for Dairy Development, Dairy Processing and Infrastructure Development Fund, Supporting Dairy Cooperatives and Farmer Producer Organizations engaged in dairy activities, National Livestock Mission, Animal Husbandry Infrastructure Development Fund, Livestock Health and Disease Control and National Animal Disease Control Programme.

There is huge potential in livestock and dairying sector which has been continuously growing at Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 7.93% during 2014-15 to 2020-21 (at constant prices) contributed by subsection of the Livestock Sector such as Dairy, Bovine, Poultry, Goatery/Piggery etc.

Further, livestock sector has contributed around 30% during the year 2020-21 in total agriculture and allied sector GVA (at constant prices). Around 8 crore households are employed in the animal husbandry and dairying sector, the reported added.
