PM Modi

In his second-ever podcast appearance with US-based AI researcher and podcaster Lex Fridman, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke about India's strong stand against terrorism, describing it as a global threat that affects many countries, not just India.

The PM dismissed the idea that terrorism comes from ideological differences. Instead, he said it comes from a mindset focused on destruction and chaos and warned against seeing it through political or religious lenses, calling it a danger to all of humanity.

Reflecting on India's long fight against terrorism, he stressed the need for countries to work together to dismantle terrorist networks and cut off their funding. Modi also urged nations that support or shelter terrorists to rethink their stance, warning that violence only leads to destruction.

Meanwhile, India's approach to combating terror strongly follows the PM’s vision with proactive measures including strict policies, military action, and international cooperation.

Strengthening India's Anti-Terror Efforts

To improve its fight against terrorism, the Modi government has introduced several legal changes. The Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) was amended to allow individuals to be labelled as terrorists.

Further, security agencies, especially the National Investigation Agency (NIA), have been given more power, leading to a conviction rate of nearly 95% in UAPA cases.

The government has also focused on using advanced technology to tackle threats like cyber terrorism and terror financing. A 25-point plan was created to stop funding for terrorism through fake currency, narcotics, and illegal money transfers.

Decisive Military Action

India has shown its willingness to act against terrorism with military operations. After the 2016 Uri attack, the Indian Army carried out surgical strikes across the Line of Control, targeting terrorist bases.

Following the 2019 Pulwama attack, the Indian Air Force conducted airstrikes in Balakot, destroying terror camps. These actions sent a strong message that India would not hesitate to defend itself.

Impact and Global Cooperation

Thanks to these measures, terrorist incidents in India have dropped by 70% over the past decade, according to a press release from November 2024 by the Indian government. It also stated that the government continues to focus on removing the entire support system for terrorism and ensuring that security agencies work together effectively.
