Puri: A clash erupted between locals of two villages in Nagar Gram Panchayat under Astarang police limits of the district following tension over cremating of bodies.

As per sources, two persons died at Dinadian village on May 18 and 19 and their bodies were cremated near Kaliakana village. However, the incident sparked unrest and even pelting of stones between the locals of the two villages. This apart, some villagers also took to protest by placing the dead body on road. Some local shops were also set on fire during the incident.

Residents of the villages alleged that despite getting early information, the police did little to control the law and order situation from escalating in the area.

Amid heightened tension in the region, a team led by Astarang Tehsildar Rajalaxmi Nayak, BDO and other administrative officials visited the area today and held a peace meeting between the senior representatives from both villages.

A peace committee has also been set up which has finalized a place for cremation purposes in the region. The committee will also work to resolve all kinds of disputes arising between the local residents of both villages.
