India Post has announced it will discontinue its iconic Registered Post service starting September 1, 2025, bringing to a close a communication tradition that has spanned over five decades.
The move comes as part of a larger modernization effort, with the service being merged into the more contemporary Speed Post framework.
Registered Post has long been valued for its affordability, reliability, and legal acceptance, often used for delivering critical documents like legal notices, appointment letters, and official communications. But with rising digitisation, competition from private couriers, and changing customer behaviour, usage of the service has steadily declined.
According to India Post data, the number of registered items dropped from 244.4 million in 2011-12 to 184.6 million by 2019-20, even before the COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the shift to digital modes of communication.
While the standalone Registered Post service is ending, its key features, secure handling, delivery tracking, and proof of delivery will now be offered as value-added options under Speed Post. This integration aims to combine faster delivery with retained security features, enhancing user convenience.
For example, an Rs 5 letter can still be registered for Rs 17 extra, maintaining proof-of-delivery options. However, the cost difference has raised concerns, especially among rural users who rely heavily on postal services.
Officials say the change is aimed at simplifying services, cutting operational costs, and aligning with today’s digital-first communication needs. While nostalgia surrounds the departure of Registered Post, India Post believes this transformation will modernise its operations while preserving the trust and reliability that users value.
