New train ticket booking rules: IRCTC norms to keep in mind in 2025 to avoid inconvenience

Indian Railways has introduced significant updates to its train ticket booking system, effective from November 1, 2024. Primarily concerning the advance reservation period (ARP), these adjustments aim to streamline the booking process and improve ticket availability closer to travel dates and will shape all fresh bookings made in 2025.

As per the notified changes, Indian Railways has already implemented the following into its system as well as the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) platform.

1. Advance Reservation Period (ARP) Reduction:

Passengers can now book train tickets up to 60 days in advance, down from the previous 120-day period. The reason behind this change is intended to provide more dynamic booking opportunities and reduce speculative bookings.

It is pertinent to note, however, that any tickets booked before October 31, 2024, under the old 120-day rule, will remain valid.

2. Ticket Cancellations:

Passengers who booked tickets beyond the new 60-day limit will still be allowed to cancel their reservations.

3. Exemptions:

Special and daytime express trains, such as the Taj Express and Gomti Express, which already have shorter booking windows, are exempt from this change. Additionally, foreign tourists will continue to benefit from a 365-day advance reservation period.

4. Enhancing Technology and IRCTC:

Indian Railways is leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) to improve seat allocation, especially in its IRCTC booking platform.

The AI-enabled new system will analyze passenger data and predict available seats after reservation charts are created, which happens four hours before departure. In turn, this move will benefit waitlist passengers and prevent last-minute hurdles and stress.

The new Indian Railway changes and rules aim to facilitate better travel and planning, making rail travel more accessible and convenient in 2025.
