JNU cuts ties with Turkey's Inonu University over national security concerns amid rising tensions

PUBLISHED: LAST UPDATE:

Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has paused its partnership with Inonu University over national security concerns, amid tensions from Turkey's support to Pakistan during Operation Sindoor.

In a significant move reflecting India's growing unease with Turkey’s pro-Pakistan stance, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has suspended its academic partnership with Turkey’s Inonu University, citing “national security considerations.” The decision comes amid a wave of diplomatic strain following the controversial Turkish support to Pakistan during Operation Sindoor.

Academic Ties Severed

On the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), JNU made a brief but firm announcement: “The MoU with Inonu University has been suspended due to national security considerations. JNU stands with the nation.”

According to official records, the agreement, signed on February 3, 2025, was set to last until February 2028, facilitating academic exchange and cooperation. However, current events have prompted a swift rollback, as national interests take precedence.

Backdrop: Drone Warfare and Diplomatic Fallout

The suspension comes shortly after Turkey found itself at the center of a growing controversy. Turkish-origin drones were reportedly used by Pakistan in attacks against Indian targets, intensifying hostilities during Operation Sindoor—India’s powerful response to the horrific Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 civilians.

Though India and Pakistan agreed to a ceasefire on May 10 following four days of cross-border strikes, public sentiment against Turkey has reached a boiling point.

Digital Clampdown and Tourism Backlash

In a related development, Indian authorities temporarily blocked X accounts of the Turkish state-run broadcaster TRT World for spreading anti-India propaganda. At the same time, travel platforms such as MakeMyTrip and EaseMyTrip have reported a wave of cancellations to Turkey and Azerbaijan, reflecting public anger toward nations perceived as siding with Pakistan.

Trade and Diplomatic Tensions Loom

India’s trade relationship with Turkey may also feel the tremors of this rift. With Ankara openly backing Islamabad and criticizing India’s counter-terrorism efforts, bilateral ties are expected to cool further.

As India recalibrates its global partnerships post-Operation Sindoor, JNU’s decision marks a symbolic yet significant step, one that aligns academia with national sentiment, sending a clear message: National security comes first.
