Jagdeep Dhankhar, India's 14th Vice President, resigns citing health concerns, ending a notable tenure marked by impartiality in the Rajya Sabha and a controversial stint as West Bengal Governor.

Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar

India’s 14th Vice President, Jagdeep Dhankhar, has tendered his resignation effective immediately, citing the need to “prioritise health care and abide by medical advice.” The 73-year-old’s decision comes after months of speculation about his health following a hospitalisation earlier this year.

A Decisive Victory and Term as Vice President

Dhankhar assumed office on 11 August 2022 after a sweeping victory in the vice-presidential election, securing 528 out of 710 votes (74%). His tenure saw him serve as the ex-officio Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, where he was often praised for his impartiality and adherence to parliamentary decorum.

From Lawyer to Political Stalwart

Born on 18 May 1951 in Jhunjhunu district, Rajasthan, Dhankhar’s career began in law. By 1990, he had gained recognition as a Senior Advocate. Entering politics with Janata Dal, he became an MP in 1989 and served briefly as Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs (1990–1991). After shifts between parties, he joined the BJP in 2003.

Governor of West Bengal and Notable Tenure

As Governor of West Bengal from 2019 to 2022, Dhankhar was known for his assertive and often controversial engagements with the state government, earning him both admiration and criticism.

Stepping Down for Health

In March 2025, Dhankhar was admitted to AIIMS Delhi for cardiac issues but later resumed his duties. Now, he has chosen to step down to focus fully on his health and wellbeing.
