The Indian Army on Saturday unveiled its new combat uniform for the first time in public, on the occasion of its 74th foundation day. Commandos of the Army's Parachute Regiment, decked in the new uniform, marched on the parade ground in Delhi Cantt today.

Here are some of the features of the new uniform which replaces the force's decades-old combat battledress:-

  1. The new uniform features a digital camouflage pattern instead of the organic print. However, the colour combinations are same as the present one
  2. The Army has said that the new uniform has been created in collaboration with the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT)
  3. The new military fatigue has been designed keeping in mind comfort as the most priority for soldiers, apart from uniformity in design.
  4. Unlike the present one, the new uniform will not need shirts to be tucked inside the trouser while the belt will be under the dress
  5. The fabric of the military fatigue is stronger, lighter, and durable
  6. It is more climate-friendly and suitable for almost all kinds of terrain and also varieties of weather conditions due to its better functional design
  7. The changes in the design of the uniform have also been made to make it more comfortable for women personnel

India celebrates her Army Day every year on January 15, to pay homage to gallant soldiers who made supreme sacrifice to protect the sovereignty of the motherland. The day also remembers the occasion when General (later Field Marshal) KM Carriappa took the reigns of India's Army from General Sir FRR Bucher, the last British Commander-in-Chief in 1949, to become the first Commander of the country's Army after her freedom from the imperial rule.
