India was under the British Rule for more than three centuries. At one time, the Indians had become so used to slavery and injustice that they never thought that they will ever live like free citizens in this country that had always promoted justice and free spirit. But it was the zealous efforts and sacrifices of the freedom fighters that forced the British monarchy to leave India. They are the reason why we Indians celebrate Independence Day every year on the 15th of August.

Mahatma Gandhi

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi also fondly called the Father of Nation made many sacrifices and also introduced various movements and independence struggles so that he could awaken his fellow countrymen. Gandhi played a critical role in India’s independence struggle and was the man behind the non-violent and non-cooperation movement. The historic Dandi March as well as the Quit India movement were started under him.

Subhash Chandra Bose

Famously known as Netaji, he was one of the biggest forces that made Indian independence possible. He was a hero and a radical nationalist who disagreed with Gandhi’s non-violence ideals and believed that only an army revolt can oust the British. Ultimately he did form the Indian National Army (INA) and with Japanese help even freed a part of Manipur from the English dominance. To date, his death remains a mystery although officially it was declared that he died in 1945 in a plane crash.

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel

Popularly called the Iron Man of India, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel played a key role in the freedom struggle of India. However, he also contributed hugely to shaping democracy in the country as he was the first Home Minister of India. It was his intervention that persuaded many princely states like Nizam of Hyderabad to hand over sovereignty to Indian democracy. He was one of the biggest freedom fighters and leaders from Gujarat who led the peasant movement against the British successfully.

Bhagat Singh

He was one of the young revolutionary fighters who led a very controversial life as he was opposed to many ideas of his senior freedom fighters of those days. Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, Sukhdev, and Chandrashekhar Azad were a part of the plot to assassinate James Scott planned to take revenge for Lala Lajpat Rai’s death. While the assassination failed the following year Bhagat Singh and his group hurled a bomb in Delhi at the Central Legislative Assembly and later surrendered. He was hanged at the very young age of 23.

Rani Laxmibai of Jhansi

She was an important figure in India’s fight for freedom and was one of the main leaders who led the Revolt of 1857. When Lord Dalhousie ordered that the princely state of Jhansi will be annexed to the British Empire as it did not have any heir, Rani decided to revolt. At the same time, the 1857 revolt had broken across the country and she decided to take part in it with all her might. She fought live a brave fighter and succumbed to injuries.
