Gujarat girl scored 478 in NEET, secured govt medical seat but family responds with murder

In a chilling case from Gujarat’s Banaskantha district, an 18-year-old NEET qualifier, Chandrika Chaudhary, was allegedly murdered by her father and uncle to prevent her from pursuing a medical education and marrying by choice.

According to the FIR filed by her partner, Haresh Chaudhary (23), Chandrika’s family feared she might enter into a relationship after joining medical college. Allegedly, her uncle, after visiting several colleges and seeing boys and girls studying together, warned her father against sending her to study.

Haresh alleged that the family confiscated Chandrika’s phone, removed her from social media, and confined her to household chores. Police investigations suggest that the accused, Sendha (father) and Shivram (uncle), allegedly gave her sedatives before strangling her with a dupatta. They reportedly tried to tamper with evidence, presenting it as a heart attack to villagers.

Chandrika had scored 478 marks in NEET, securing a seat in a government medical college. However, her family opposed her plans to continue education. While Shivram is in police custody, Sendha remains absconding.

Such cases raise serious concern as well as agony highlighting how patriarchal mindsets and regressive beliefs continue to claim the lives of bright young women in India.
