First ‘sleeping pod’ facility in East Coast Railway zone
In a move set to redefine passenger convenience, Visakhapatnam railway station has unveiled its first-ever ‘sleeping pod’ facility, a capsule hotel concept that caters to transit passengers, solo women travellers, and tourists. This is the first facility of its kind in the East Coast Railway (ECoR) zone and is designed to meet the growing demand for affordable, short-stay accommodations at the busy station.
According to The Hindu, Waltair Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) Lalit Bohra inaugurated the facility on Thursday, describing it as a pilot project inspired by similar setups in major metropolitan cities.
Located near Gate No. 3 on Platform No. 1, the sleeping pods provide 73 single beds, 15 double beds, and 18 dedicated beds for women travellers, all within a secure hall featuring separate washrooms and dressing rooms.
Amenities include free Wi-Fi, 24-hour hot water, an in-house snack bar, and a travel desk for assistance. The tariff is equally traveller-friendly, Rs 200 for three hours or Rs 400 for up to 24 hours for a single pod, and Rs 300 for three hours or Rs 600 for 24 hours for a double pod.
Replying to queries, Mr. Bohra said that apart from bona fide passengers, other visitors could also use the facility based on availability.
In addition to the sleeping pods, Visakhapatnam railway station is gearing up for a major redevelopment. Plans include a 72-metre air concourse with retail spaces and seamless integration with the upcoming Metro Rail station for enhanced connectivity.
With these upgrades, Visakhapatnam railway station is set to become a model of comfort and convenience, ensuring travellers enjoy a restful and connected journey.
