Mahapatra, renowned in the literary fraternity and the community of readers alike, is admired for his matchless composition of literary pieces like the Indian Summer and Hunger which are considered as classics in modern Indian English literature.
He has been conferred with numerous top literary awards like the Sahitya Akademi, Jacob Glatstein memorial award. He was felicitated with the Padma Shri in 2009 but he returned the award protesting rising intolerance in the country.
