Bhubaneswar: Odisha lost a true gem in the passing away of veteran sculptor Raghunath Mohapatra. A man on a mission his entire life, his dedication to revive the past riches of the famed art and architecture of the ancient Odisha always reflected in his sculptures and his pursuits.

Apart from the magic that he wielded with his hands a chisel, he once stunned millions when he unveiled his dream of a second Sun Temple in Odisha to restore the profound glory of this astounding piece of architecture of which only a portion remains in Konark.

From embellishing his sculptures in some of the most noted sites all around the globe, be it the Indian Parliament or the Buddha Temple in Paris to earning all the big civilian awards the country has to offer except the Bharat Ratna, Mohapatra's works and achievements speak for themselves.

The passing away of Mohapatra who was also a Rajjya Sabha member from Odisha has sparked a flood of condolences pouring in from all sections of society, from the Prime Minister to literary and art associations and even the common man.

Odisha Governor Ganeshi Lal paid tributes to Mohapatra with a note on social media saying – He will be eternally remembered for his exquisite sculptures.”

 

PM Modi termed his contribution to art and culture is second to none.

 

Andhra Pradesh Governor Biswabhusan Harichandan said India lost a great talent in Mohapatra.

Noted culture expert Rajat Kar prayed before Lord Jagannath with a condolence note on the passing away of Mohapatra.

 

Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and BJP National Vice President Jay Panda also expressed grief.

 

Odisha Culture Minister Jyoti Panigrahi expressed anguish on the news and said remembered Mohapatra’s contribution towards propagation of Odia art and culture.
