CBDT extends ITR filing deadline to September 15 amid major reforms in income tax return system

PUBLISHED: LAST UPDATE:

The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) extends the ITR filing deadline to September 15, 2025, for AY 2025–26. This move aims to aid transition to revised tax return forms and ensure accurate reporting.

ITR Filing Date Extended

In a significant move aimed at easing taxpayer compliance and ensuring a smooth transition to newly restructured income tax return forms, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) under the Ministry of Finance on Tuesday extended the due date for filing Income Tax Returns (ITRs) for Assessment Year (AY) 2025–26.

As per the official notification, the returns that were initially due by 31st July 2025 can now be filed up to 15th September 2025.

Why Extension?

The extension comes in the wake of comprehensive structural and content revisions made to the ITR forms for AY 2025–26. According to CBDT, these changes are part of a broader initiative to simplify compliance, enhance transparency, and enable accurate reporting. However, the overhaul has also necessitated additional time for system development, integration, and testing of the corresponding e-filing utilities.

The department further pointed out that TDS (Tax Deducted at Source) statement credits, which are crucial for filing accurate returns, are expected to begin reflecting only by early June this year. The existing deadline of 31st July would have left taxpayers with limited time to complete their filings if the extension had not been granted.

"Considering the extensive changes and the time required for system readiness and rollout, the extension aims to provide a smoother and more convenient filing experience for taxpayers," stated the CBDT. The department clarified that a formal notification announcing the revised deadline will be issued separately.

Officials emphasized that the decision also addresses concerns raised by stakeholders about the short time frame available under the new regime. The extra time is expected to reduce filing errors, ease the burden on taxpayers and tax practitioners, and enhance the overall integrity and accuracy of the filing process.

V. Rajitha, Commissioner of Income Tax (Media & Technical Policy) and the Official Spokesperson of CBDT, reiterated that the department remains committed to supporting taxpayers while implementing reforms aimed at modernizing the country’s tax administration system.

The move has been largely welcomed by tax professionals and industry bodies, who were advocating for more time given the scale of revisions involved. Many experts believe that the decision reflects a balanced approach by the government—prioritizing systemic efficiency while remaining sensitive to public needs.

With this extension, taxpayers and preparers now have an additional six weeks to adapt to the new forms, verify TDS entries, and file accurate returns, thereby reducing the risk of non-compliance or penalties.
