Budget 2025: Finance Minister announces expansion of capacity in IITs, cancer care in district hospitals

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, in Budget 2025, announced IIT capacity expansion, a new AI Centre of Excellence for education, and cancer centres at all district hospitals. The government also plans to add 10,000 medical seats next year.

During her Budget presentation in Lok Sabha today, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharman announced the expansion of capacity in IIT. Total number of 23 IITs has increased 100% percent from 65000 to 1.35L in the past 10 years. Additional infrastructure will be created in the five IITs started after 2014 to facilitate education for 6500 more students.

Hostel and other infrastructure facilities at IIT Patna will also be expanded. 

Centre of excellence in AI for education:

"I had announced 3 centres of excellence in AI for agriculture, health and sustainable cities in 2023. Now a centre of excellence in Artificial Intelligence for education will be set up with a total outlay of 500 crores."

Expansion of medical examination:

"Our government has added almost 1.1 L undergraduate and postgraduate medical education seats in 10 years. In the next year 10,000 additional seats will be added in medical colleges and hospitals towards the goal of adding 75, 000 seats in the next five years."

Cancer centres in all district hospitals:
"Our government will facilitate the setting up of cancer centres in all district hospitals in the next 3 years. 200 centres will be established in 2025 2026 and 2027."
