Baripada: Taking advantage of poor security measures and patrolling by police, miscreants looted gold and silver ornaments from a jewellery shop in Badasahi town in Mayurbhanj district in the wee hours on Monday.

Armed miscreants committed the crime after holding hostage the family members of a fire officer staying on the second floor of the jewellery shop.

According to reports, the dacoits first managed to gain entry into the house of the fire officer and after taking his son and other family members’ hostage, they entered the store, Ambika Jewellers, by breaking the back door.

Sources said, the armed miscreants had tied the fire officer and had come with all the house breaking equipment.

The incident has sparked off resentment as there have been a series of loot, dacoity and robbery incidents at Badasahi in the past one month.

Protesting against poor security measures, all the market establishments remained closed today. Meanwhile, police have begun investigation into the incident.
