A youth who attempted suicide by slitting his wrist and consuming poison in front of the Odisha Assembly over alleged denial of treatment under the Biju Krushak Kalyan Yojana (BKKY), died on Wednesday.

Dusmanta Das, a native of Kujang area in Jagatsinghpur district, took the extreme step today when the Monsoon Session of the State legislature was in progress.

Speaking about the passing away of the youth, emergency officer of SCB Medical College and Hospital, Bhubanananda Maharana termed it 'an 'unfortunate incident'.

“Certainly it is an unfortunate incident. When Dusmanta Das had come to the hospital after suffering injuries in a road traffic accident, he had suffered bad cross injury. A team of doctors of the plastic surgery and orthopaedic department had performed surgery which lasted for 10 to 12 hours. The doctors’ team had saved his leg. The SCB Medical College and Hospital provided best treatment to him free of cost.”

“After his leg was saved, he was called for physiotherapy. Eventually he requested us to refer him to AIIMS Bhubaneswar. Subsequently, we discharged him and referred to AIIMS Bhubaneswar,” Maharana said.
Maharana said he was again referred to SCB from Capital Hospital today as a case of pesticide poisoning at around 4 pm.

“Despite all efforts by our doctors, he passed away at 6.45 pm today,” he said.

According to sources, before being shifted to Capital hospital, Das told reporters that he had met with an accident on March 22, 2020 and sustained grievous injuries on his left leg. Later, he was admitted to the SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack for treatment.

He had undergone a surgery on March 23, 2020 and another on June 19, 2020. However, the doctors allegedly discharged him from the hospital on July 15, 2020 owing to the Covid-19 situation.
