A youth was killed in a blast while he was engaged in digging a well at Ratanpur village under Puranakatak Police Station limits in Boudh district on Friday.

The deceased has been identified as Surendra Bagarty of Khaibhuin village under Harabhanga Police Station limits of the district.

As per reports, a contractor identified as Sumanta Sahoo had taken the job of digging a well at the house of one Vishikeshan Pradhan of Ratanpur village.

Sahoo engaged Bagarty and some other labourers for digging the well with some explosives. While they were working yesterday, the explosives did not blast for some unknown reasons.

Following this, Bagarty went inside the half dug well to check the explosives. While he was checking the explosives, a blast occurred leading to his death on the spot.

Later, Pradhan and the family members of Bagarty lodged an FIR with Puranakatak Police in connection with the incident. Based on the complaint, police have started investigating the matter.

"He had gone to dig the well and while working, he died in the blast," said Nirupama Bagarty, a relative of the deceased.

"I had given the contract for digging the well to Sumanta Sahoo. Sahoo was working with some labourers when the youth went inside the well to check the explosives. In the meantime, the explosion took place and the youth died," informed Pradhan, the owner of the house.
