A curious case of a woman staging dharna at the house of the groom after the latter allegedly deserted her on the wedding day unfolded in Berhampur on Monday.

As per reports, the bride, Dimple Dash sat on a dharna at the gate of her groom, Sumit Sahu’s house at Brahma Nagar in the Silk city after he did not turn up at the marriage venue where they were supposed to tie the knot.

Peeved at the desertion, Dimple, along with her mother, threatened to commit suicide if the matter was not resolved before daybreak.

Sources said Dash and Sahu already had their legal wedding at a marriage registrar’s office sometime back. Today they were supposed to solemnize the marriage with customary Hindu rituals which could not happen after the groom allegedly did not turn up.

An agitated Dimple vented her anger on the Police personnel present at the spot and accused them of taking bribe from the groom’s family to keep quiet. “They all have been bribed by him (Sahu) and I have proof which I will produce in the court,” she said.

When contacted, Berhampur SP Pinak Mishra said, “The woman claimed that she was married to the youth (Sahu). A case has already been registered at the Mahila Police station in the past in this connection. Notices have already been served to the persons mentioned in the FIR. Later, the groom’ family also filed a complaint against the bride’s family and a chargesheet has also been filed in the court over the same.”

Asked about the alleged police inaction, Mishra said “When a case is sub-judice the role of the Police gets restricted. We will act as per the court’s direction.”
