A woman labourer's right hand got severed after it accidently trapped in a machine while she was working at a brick kiln at Urbengi village under Dhankanal’s Kamakhyanagar block on Saturday.
The victim was identified as Surubali Singh from the same village.
Following a preliminary treatment at the Kamakhyanagar hospital, she was shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack with the severed hand for reattachment surgery.
As per reports, Singh was working near a machine at the brick kiln when her hand was suddenly pulled in by a belt and before anybody could switch the machine off the hand was already severed from her body.
Speaking to the reporters, the owner of the kiln, Dharmendra Mohanta said, “This was a small setup and we did not have required safety licenses.”
Another worker, Sourav Mohanta said, “Singh was careless while working around the machines. She was too close when the mishap happened. I rushed to switch the machine off after I heard her screams, but it was too late and her hand was already amputated.”
Speaking about the labour license, Sourav said, “We all have labour cards and Aadhaar cards with us.”
The Kankadahada Police was on the spot to investigate the matter.
