A woman cadre belonging to the Kalahandi-Kandhamal-Boudh-Nayagarh (KKBN) division of outlawed CPI (Maoist) surrendered before the Director General of Police (DGP) in Sunabeda of Koraput district on Sunday.

The surrendered rebel has been identified as Phulabati. Her surrender coincided with the visit of DGP Abhay to Malkangiri district.

Briefing the media, the top cop said the woman cadre was working as an area committee member (ACM) in the KKBN division.

“She decided to return to the mainstream after witnessing various developmental activities being undertaken by the State government in this area. I urged all other Maoists to follow her path and lay down arms before the police to return to the mainstream of the society,” said Abhay.

“They will get financial assistance as per the Surrender and Rehabilitation Scheme of State government for building a house, pursuing studies, and getting training in a trade/vocation of her will,” the top cop added.

Meanwhile, Abhay visited the newly-set up BSF camp at Ghanabedha in Malkangiri district along with other top security officials and reviewed the Left-Wing Extremism (LWE) scenario and anti-Maoist operations.

“BSF has immense contribution in the anti-Maoist operations in Odisha. They have a very positive approach and they have set up the camp within a record time. Over the next few weeks Odisha Police Housing Corporation will set their camp fully,” said Abhay.

Notably, the BSF camp has been set up at Ghanabedha in Panasputa Panchayat before two days to start operation against the Maoists in the area.
