In a shocking incident, a woman committed suicide by consuming poison following a quarrel with her husband over a mobile phone at MPV 14 village in Malkangiri district on Tuesday.

The deceased has been identified as Jyoti, wife of Kanhei, a resident of MPV 14 village. They were married for just one year.

According to sources, Jyoti had been demanding a costly mobile phone. Going to please her, Kanhei had bought her a mobile on EMI. But he hadn’t disclosed to his wife that he had bought it on finance.

She came to know about it when a staff of the finance company visited their house after the payment of the last instalment.

Following this, they had a spat over Kanhei hiding the facts. The scene took an ugly turn when Jyoti consumed a potion of poison before Kanhei. Seeing this, the latter collapsed on the ground.

The family members rescued them and rushed them immediately to Maljangiri district headquarters hospital (DHH) where Jyoti died while undergoing treatment. Kanhei is undergoing treatment at the same hospital.

“She had told me that she would not receive low-cost mobile phone. I bought her a costly phone on EMI. But I didn’t disclose to her the fact that I had bought it on EMI. When she came to know about this, she got angry with me and we had a heated argument,” said Kanhei.

Even though no complaint was lodged in this regard, taking suo moto cognizance of the case, the police registered a case and launched an investigation.
