An elderly woman and her three grandchildren on Friday were left battling for their lives after they consumed urea thinking it to be sugar at Bambarada village under Barkot police limits in Deogarh district.

The three have been admitted to Deogarh District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) where their condition was stated to be critical.

According to sources, the three children were with their grandmother after their parents left for work Friday morning. During lunch hours, the four decided to eat flat-rice.

Instead of adding sugar, they added urea in the flat-rice and consumed it. Soon, they complained of stomach-ache and experienced vomiting.

“We had gone to work when the children mixed urea in the flat-rice and consumed it, thinking it to be sugar. We immediately rushed them to the local hospital. After preliminary treatment, they were referred to Deogarh DHH,” informed the mother of the children.
