The enforcement squad of Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Sunday sealed Unit-4 fish market (Wholesale & Retail) for allegedly operating on weekend shutdown in the city.

As per an order issued by the BMC, the market has been sealed for mass violation of Covid appropriate behaviour during the shutdown period, in larger public interest and with a view to contain any possibilities of spread of Covid-19 virus.

BMC Zonal Deputy Commissioner, Anshuman Rath said, “The BMC enforcement squad had also found mass violation of the weekend shutdown restrictions at the market last week. We had warned the traders and they had assured to follow the guidelines. However, we found that the few shops in the wholesale market were open and business was going on at the retail market as well.”

According to Rath, as Covid cases are not declining much in Bhubaneswar, the surprise raid was conducted in the city.

“Apart from the administration, it is also the responsibility of the people to follow the norms and guidelines of the State government. Today’s action is just a measure to ensure that everybody follows the guidelines,” Rath added.

Sk Mustafa, President of the Fish Market Association said, “The association had earlier warned all traders and owners to follow all the government norms after we detected some violations last week. Despite such warnings, a few people had opened their godowns for which the BMC today sealed the entire market.”
