Bargarh: Two under trial prisoners (UTPs) lodged at the Baragarh sub-jail sustained injury after jail officials allegedly beat them up severely for opposing sub-standard food being served to them.

Mother of one of the accused, Sunita Gupta has alleged that her son was beaten so severely that he fainted inside the jail.

“The jail authorities are serving sub-standard food. When my son opposed this they (9 jail officials) beat him up so severely that he became senseless. When my son fainted, they examined him using a machine to find out whether he was dead or alive. My son is now in a critical condition,” Gupta alleged.

“If he commits any offence, he would be punished as per law. But, jail authorities have no rights to torture him inside the prison,” she added.

On the other hand, jail officials sought to dismiss the allegation levelled by the mother of the UTP. They rather accused the prisoners of indulging in nuisance and causing damages to jail properties.

“Both the accused always misbehave with the jail staff and indulged in quarrel with the other inmates. They have also beaten up many other inmates without any reason leaving them injured. Their allegation of sub-standard food is completely false. They sometimes steal snacks stored for other inmates. The foods we are providing to the prisoners may be examined to assess quality,” claimed Anjali Patel, a jail official.

“Our staffs have lodged a complaint with me regarding the duo’s misbehaviour and delinquency in the jail. None of our staff have beaten him,” she added.

The two UTPs have been lodged in the sub-jail in a theft case.  They alleged that they were subjected to torture inside the prison.
