Tragedy struck Alipingala village under Nimapara police jurisdiction of Puri district where two minor boys died due to drowning in a pond on Friday on the occasion of Kartik Purnima.

The deceased were identified as Sairam Barik (10) and Shakti Sahu (7). 

According to sources, a Kirtan was being organised at Alipingala village on the occasion of Kartika Purnima when the minor duo went to collect miniature boats set afloat in the pond to mark Boita Bandana.

While collecting the boats, the pair slipped deep into the water and drowned. Some other children who were present at the spot screamed for help following which some villagers jumped into the pond and rescued the two boys. 

They were immediately rushed to a hospital in Nimapara. However, the doctors at the hospital pronounced the duo dead. 

Earlier in the day, a 12-year-old boy was swept away by strong water currents while sailing a miniature boat in Brahmani River in Dhenkanal district.

Roshan Nayak, a Class-IX student of Latabila Sahi, had taken a dip after sailing the miniature boat when he was swept away by the strong water currents.

Upon being informed, fire fighting personnel reached the spot immediately and launched a rescue operation to trace the boy. The search operation was underway at the time of reporting.
