The Orissa High Court on Tuesday eased the maintenance allowance burden for Dr Sumit Sahu who has been caught in a marital dispute with his wife Tapaswini Dash.

In a fresh ruling, the High Court has asked Sumit to pay Rs 10,000 to his wife Tapaswini instead of Rs 17,000 per month.

The HC was hearing a petition filed by Sumit’s family seeking reduction in the maintenance amount citing that arrangements were being made for stay of Tapaswini elsewhere.

Admitting the plea, the court directed Sumit to pay Rs 10,000 to his wife instead of Rs 17,000 as ordered by a lower court.  However, Tapaswini will stay at her in-laws’ house till the next hearing of the case, the court ruled.

In its previous hearing earlier this month, the HC had upheld the ruling of the Berhampur district court which had ordered Sumit to pay a maintenance allowance of Rs 17,000 to his wife Tapaswini by 10th of every month.

Tapaswini, who had been fighting the legal battle to save her marriage, had received some relief after the District Court in Berhampur had ruled in her favour and directed her to live at her in-law’s house at Brahmanagar in the Silk City with her husband Sumit Sahu.

However, Sumit had knocked the Orissa High Court’s door challenging the District court’s January 4 order.
