Family members of software engineer Sweta Utkal Kumari whose body was found hanging in an apartment in Bhubaneswar recently expressed discontentment over police investigation being sluggish.

Addressing media, Sweta’s father Sushant Das said, “Police have registered a case against his daughter’s boyfriend Soumyajit Mohapatra under IPC Section 306 (offence of abetment to suicide) on basis of a complaint filed by me but are not doing anything worth important to ascertain the whereabouts of Soumyajit. I am deeply hurt by police statement ‘We are searching’ whenever asked about the progress of the case.”

He further said, “Soumyajit along with his parents had come to Chandrasekharpur police station on Sunday when we had come to file a complaint against him. They went to the police station, after we had left. Soumyajit had been torturing my daughter mentally, physically and financially to such an extent that she was forced to commit suicide.  Police should arrest him and take stringent action against him without delay.”

Sweta’s brother has also sought stringent action against the accused.

Sweta, a resident of Bhadrak, who worked with a reputed IT company in Bhubaneswar, was believed to be in a relationship with Soumyajit. The family members of the deceased alleged that she took the extreme step after being blackmailed by her boyfriend.

“Soumyajit ruined the life of my daughter. I would like to request the state government to order a probe and take stringent action against Soumyajit,” said deceased Sweta’s mother.

The police have recovered a diary and a mobile phone from the deceased's room. Her boyfriend’s name, Soumyajit, was reportedly mentioned in the diary.
