Shocking scenes came from Khetagada village under Rayagada’s Gudari block where a mentally disabled woman aged 31 years have been living tied up in chains since seven years.

As per reports, Manik Shabar has been tied up in iron chains by her parents since seven years at her home fearing she will get away and never come back.

Sources said, Manik is married and has a child. Her mental condition started to deteriorate after the child birth following which her husband left her.

Her parents, Haribandhu and Sarojini took her to the doctor but her health situation did not improve. Belonging to a poor family, they could not afford more money for treatment and decided to tie her up in their home.

Speaking about her ordeal, mother Sarojini said, “We took her to Andhra Pradesh for treatment but her treatment required more money which we do not have.”

We have tied her up so that she does not escape and get lost somewhere owing to her mental condition,” Sarojini added.

When asked about her treatment, Medical Officer of Gudari Community Health Centre, Arupananda Behera said, “I will send a team to assess the ground situation. After getting the report, I will make arrangements for her free treatment at this health centre.”

“She will anyway get free treatment under BSKY. As a woman, she can avail free treatment up to a limit of Rs 10 lakh. So, there is absolutely no problem in treating her,” Behara added.
