  • Residents threatened to intensify their protest if their demand is not fulfilled within six months

At a time when the Satya Nagar crematorium in Bhubaneswar is struggling to cope with the rising number of bodies, demand for its shifting to a new location is getting louder.

The local residents who alleged that the burning of bodies is causing air pollution have demanded the immediate relocation of the crematorium to some other place in the city. The crematorium is also facing acute space crunch at the current location.

On Wednesday, a group of residents held a signature campaign and subsequently submitted a memorandum to the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) demanding immediate measures.

“A signature campaign was conducted which was participated by about 600 to 700 people from Sahid Nagar, Unit 9 and Satya Nagar. About 95 per cent residents are in favour of our demand and cooperating with us in the campaign,” said Anuradha Das, a member of Satya Nagar Development Council.

The residents threatened to intensify their protest if their demand is not fulfilled within six months.

On the other hand, BMC authorities said necessary measures will be taken in this regard after detailed analysis.

“Senior citizens from Satya Nagar submitted their written complaint demanding shifting of the crematorium and documents containing signatures of people. They demanded that the crematorium need to be shifted to elsewhere looking at the emerging situation,” said BMC additional commissioner Laxmikant Sethi.

“Human settlements have increased in the area and hotels, enterprises and different offices are set up. We will hold discussion on their demand in the coming days,” he added.
