Vehicular movement on the national highway connecting Sonepur and Sambalpur disrupted after a plasma blast triggered a massive landslide at Bhatra area in Sambalpur district on Thursday.

According to sources, the landslide occurred near Dhamaroad area in Dhanupali in the district allegedly after a stone blast by Swaraj Board.
About 75 percentage of the road has been blown away by the landslide, which blocked traffic movement from either side. It has even blocked the way for ambulance to the village, said sources.

Meanwhile, the residents of Bhatra have expressed displeasure over the frequent plasma blasts in the area for rock fracturing that has turned into a great inconvenience for the local residence and a safety hazard for motorists.

Attributing the stone blast as the reason behind the landslide, Lokanath Bisi, a local, said “The regular blasts in the vicinity are creating fly rocks of both bigger and smaller size, which are causing major problems for the passer-by. The houses in the village are also being affected by the flyrocks."

Although the residents had informed the local authorities about the problems those are likely to occur, before the beginning of the work, the officials allegedly lent a deaf ear to their complaints.

Meanwhile, no response to this matter has been recorded from the concerned local authority and the working contractor.
