BJD Rajya Sabha member Prasanna Acharya on Wednesday proposed the Centre to change the name of Orissa High Court to Odisha High Court.

Acharya moved the proposal during the zero hour of the Upper House. The MP urged the Centre to bring a legislation to allow change of names of high courts in line with the change in name of the states.

In 2011, Orissa was changed to Odisha and the name of its language from Oriya to Odia with the passage of the Orissa (Alteration of Name) Bill, 2010 and the Constitution (113th Amendment) Bill, 2010 in the Parliament.

“Though Orissa became Odisha in 2011, the high court of the State continued to be called as the High Court of Orissa. Therefore, I proposed the Centre today to change the name. As there is no specific law to change the name, I urged the Centre to bring a legislation and consult with the Odisha government and the HC and change the name to High Court of Odisha,” Acharya said.

It may be recalled that the Orissa High Court came into existence on July 26, 1948 with Bira Kishore Ray as the Chief Justice and B Jagannadha Das, L Panigrahi and RL Narasingham as Puisne Judges. It was inaugurated by HJ Kania, the then Chief Justice of the Federal Court of India.
