Opposing the move by the Central Government to privatise the Biju Patnaik International Airport (BPIA) in Bhubaneswar, the members of the Odisha Youth Congress submitted a memorandum to the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) on Friday.

The youth Congress team that submitted the memorandum in Delhi was led by the president of Odisha Pradesh Youth Congress, Smrutiranjan Lenka.

It is pertinent to mention here the Minister of State (MoS) for Civil Aviation, Gen VK Singh informed the Rajya Sabha on July 28. 2021 that the Airport Authority of India (AAI) has approved privatisation of the Biju Pattnaik International Airport in Bhubaneswar.

Explaining their disproval in privatisation, the Congress leader pointed out, “The business at Bhubaneswar Airport is profiteering which leaves no thought of privatising it. This privatisation may extend to Jharsuguda Airport in the future as well and such arbitrary decentralisation may cost many jobs. Hence, privatising a profitable business is a whimsical decision of the Union Government.”

The Congress further accused the Centre of crony capitalism by stating, “Trends in the allocation of privatisation contract of various other airports (outside Odisha) are pointing a finger at the present government for colluding with their old capitalist friends to benefit them through this impulsive privatisation process.”

They warned that the privatisation of Biju Pattnaik International Airport and, in future, the Jharsuguda airport should stop forthwith. Failing which,”We will take appropriate measures against such whimsical behaviour of the Government, which is more concerned for its capitalist friends than the people of Odisha.”
