For the people of Odisha, 15th President of India Draupadi Murmu’s first address to the nation will remain memorable for two reasons. First, she recited famous Odia Saint poet Bhima Bhoi’s famous lines ‘Mo Jeevana Pachhe Narke Padithau, Jagata Uddhara Heu’. Second, she donned the hand-woven saree of Odisha.

The traditional outfit Murmu wore on the swearing-in ceremony day has now become the point of discussion. The saree was a special traditional handwoven saree with a red stripe on the upper border and a green stripe with triangular spikes on the lower side.

According to culture researcher Anita Sabat, this type of sarees is woven by weavers in Sonepur district.

“We did a lot of research to know the traditional name of the saree worn by our dear President Draupadi Murmu. We came to learn that it is Badhi Kumbha Ganga Jamuna saree Silk saree with Bomkai and Bandha work,” Sabat added.

While a section of the media claims the President’s sister-in-law Sukri Tudu, who had visited the national capital to attend the historic oath-taking ceremony, brought it for Murmu, another section of media claims the saree was brought by Murmu’s family members from her home town.
