Intensifying its action against the illegal sale of banned Chinese manja, Puri Police on Wednesday raided several shops across the district. The move from the police came after the dangling threads claimed the life of a youth in Cuttack and left another youth severely injured in Puri.

Taking cognizance of reports that the Chinese synthetic strings was being sold illegally at many places in the district, teams of police personnel raided as many as 22 shops.

During the raid, the team seized large bundles of such Manja threads from at least 5 shops (2 in Town Police Station area, 2  in Kumbharpada area, 1 in Sea beach area)  where such illegal glass powder coated thread were allegedly sold.

The police have also detained the shopkeepers under CrPC section 41 and registered cases against them.

Notably, a newly married youth Jayant Samal, died after his throat was slit by banned glass-coated kite string when got entangled around his neck on December 26 in Cuttack's Pirbazar area while he was on his way to his in-laws place on a bike along with his wife. On the same evening, another person in Puri, Bhanjabihari Patra was grievously injured by such kite string.

Following the incidents, a special drive was also carried out by Commissionerate Police in different parts of the Cuttack city and 14 persons were detained on charges of the sale and storage of these illegal manja strings.
