A 50-year-old patient allegedly died by suicide by jumping off the fourth floor of the Dhenkanal district headquarters hospital (DHH) in the wee hours of Thursday.

The deceased has been identified as Duryodhan Nayak, a resident of Parjang area in the district.

According to a source, family members of Nayak got him admitted to the male medicine ward of the Dhenkanal DHH at around 10 pm yesterday. At around 3 am today, he jumped off the fourth floor of the hospital building.

The family members alleged medical negligence and no availability of bed led to the mishap.

“This all happened due to lapses in the security arrangements. If there had been proper security arrangements, my father could have been saved.  This apart, he was made to sleep on the floor even though there were vacant beds,” alleged Pinki Nayak, deceased’s daughter.

“We admitted him at the DHH at 10 pm yesterday. He was made to sleep on the floor and a saline was administered to him. Thereafter, no doctor visited him. As he was mentally sound, we are yet to know the reason why he took such an extreme decision. If there had been security guards, they could have seen him while going to the fourth floor and saved his life,” said Basant Nayak, deceased’s relative.

However, hospital authorities could not be contacted to comment over the matter.
