A joint team of the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Government Railway Police (GRP), Cuttack intercepted huge amount of cash stashed in the baggage of a passenger who was travelling in the New Delhi-bound Rajdhani Express, on Wednesday.

The passenger, identified as Arun Kumar Swain, has been detained for questioning following the recovery of bundles of cash in the denomination of Rs 10 and Rs 20 (new Indian currency notes) from his possession.

Swain was reportedly carrying the cash, estimated to be over Rs 24.50 lakh, which was stuffed inside four luggage carriers. Swain, sources said, hails from Jajpur district.

Sources said Swain had boarded the Rajdhani Express from Bhubaneswar. Following the receipt of a tip off, the joint team of RPF and GRP conducted a thorough search of the luggage and recovered the cash. As the passenger could not give any satisfactory explanation regarding the source and reason behind carrying the huge amount of cash, he was detained at Cuttack railway station for further investigation.

A team of RPF and GRP officials are currently questioning the passenger.

“The passenger claims that the cash was handed over to him by a person and he was asked to deliver it to someone in Delhi. We are carrying out further investigation and the CCTV at Bhubaneswar railway station will be examined,” said a senior RPF official.

The senior official further informed that already Income Tax department officials have been apprised about the incident and they will also assist in the investigation.
