Tension ran high at Brahmagiri area in Puri district after around 20 houses were gutted in back-to-back bombings at Nathapur village over a government land encroachment dispute on Sunday.

According to sources, a group of men reportedly hurled more than 20 bombs at the village.

The group had allegedly encroached a patch of land in 35 Mouza area, however, a local rival faction protested the move leading to eruption of a disagreement between the two groups.

In order to resolve the dispute, a meeting between the residents of 35 Mouza and the other group was called today. However, the encroachers reportedly did not turn up for the meeting and hurled bombs in the village, locals alleged.

Moreover, an assailant with a gun in his hand was spotted fleeing the area from the site.

Puri Additional SP, Sub Divisional Police Officer and Brahmagiri IIC rushed to the spot to assess the situation after the shocking incident.

As many as five platoons of police force have been deployed in the village as palpable tension continued in the area.
Further investigation into the matter is on.
