The Orissa High Court on Tuesday appointed a former district judge to monitor the ongoing investigation into the sensational murder of Kalahandi school lady teacher Mamita Meher.

The HC has directed retired district judge ABS Naidu to monitor the probe of the case which has triggered a political storm in the State.

The court’s direction came in response to a plea of the Odisha government. The government had requested the HC to nominate a sitting or retired Judge of Orissa High Court or District & Sessions Judge to monitor the investigation in order to have transparency iin the case.

Mamita, a lady teacher of Sunshine Public School in Mahaling of Kalahandi district was allegedly murdered by Gobinda Sahu, the head of the educational institution. At present, the Bolangir police are carrying out the probe in the case.

The case had triggered state-wide outrage and taken a political turn after Opposition Congress and BJP alleged the involvement of Minister of State for Home Dibya Shankar Mishra for his close proximity with the prime accused.

The Opposition mounted pressure on the State government to dismiss Mishra from the cabinet. However, the Minister repeatedly pleaded innocence and said he had nothing to do with the murder case.

Recently, BJP MP Suresh Pujari said that the party will raise several issues including case of murder of lady teacher Mamita Meher in the Parliament in the winter session that commenced on November 29.

Moreover, Opposition BJP and Congress are also preparing to raise the issue in the winter session of the Odisha Assembly beginning December 1.
