In a relief for vehicle owners, the Odisha government has announced to grant temporary permits to stage carriers which are older than 15 years. The re-registering of vehicles that are older than 15 years is going to stop from April 1, 2023 under the vehicle Scrappage policy of the Centre.

The State government has decided to issue temporary permits for a period of four months to such vehicles under clause (d) of sub-section (1) of section 87 of the Motor Vehicle Act.

The State Commerce and Transport department has written to the State Transport Authority (STA) and Regional Transport Authorities (RTAs) in this regard.

“As provided under clause (d) of sub-section (1) of section 87 of the Act, STA and RTAs without following the procedure laid down in section 80, may grant permits to be effective for a limited period which shall not in any case exceed four monthsat a time pending decision on an application for renewal of a permit and may attach to any such permit such condition as it may think fit,” Commerce & Transport department Joint Secretary, Kishore Chandra Das Das said in a letter.

Earlier, the State Transport Authority/ RTAs used to issue permit to bus and other heavy vehicles for a period of five years from the date of issuance/ renewal.

In August last year, the Centre launched the new vehicle scrappage policy with an objective to take older vehicles off road in order to reduce pollution and accidents. Under the scrappage policy, vehicle owners will be able to scrap their old vehicles once the registration expires after 15 years.
