Odisha recorded 77.2 percent voter turnout in the first phase of the Panchayat elections held on Wednesday, informed the State Election Commission (SEC).

As per a release issued by the SEC, Boudh district recorded the highest 84.7 per cent voter turnout followed by Deogarh (83.75), Jharsuguda (82.1), Angul (82.6), Subarnapur (81.56), Kalahandi (81.12), Nabarangpur (80.54) and Koraput (80.2).

Ganjam reported the lowest voter turnout with 64.96 per cent people exercising their franchise in the poll.

Notably, the voting for the first phase of the three-tier rural elections was conducted at 22379 booths in 1669 Panchayats across the State.

Despite tight security arrangements, sporadic incidents of violence were reported during the polling.

As many as 40 people were injured, including 17 seriously, after miscreants hurled bombs at booth no-IV in Alanda Panchayat in Krushnaprasad Block of Puri district in a bid to capture the booth. In another incident, miscreants attacked a presiding officer at a booth in Nihalprasad village under Gondia Block of Dhenkanal district before running away with the ballot box.

Furthermore, four journalists were brutally assaulted by miscreants who were trying to capture a booth by force, during the first phase of polling for the three-tier Panchayat Elections at Badal Panchayat under Kanas block in Puri.
