The Director General of Police (DGP), Odisha, Sunil Bansal, visited Koraput on Monday to take stock of the Maoist situation in the southern Odisha district and review the security arrangements for the urban body polls scheduled to be held on March 24.

As per reports, Bansal arrived at the BSF Sector Field and headed straight to the southern range DIG office where he held a meeting with other senior officials, including the Director and IG of Intelligence.

After the meeting, Bansal visited the OSAP Third Battalion, the office of the Special Operations Group (SOG) and the Reserve Police office.

Bansal told reporters, “We discussed the Naxal issues in Koraput and the neighbouring districts and the ways to control their activities more effectively. Apart from that, we also pondered upon the preparedness and security arrangements for the urban elections and the subsequent counting. Our primary aim is to help conduct a free and fair election in the district without any violence like the last Panchayat elections,” said Bansal.

The DGP is scheduled to visit Nabarangpur and Rayagada districts after concluding his tour to Koraput.

Elections will be held in 109 Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) including three municipal corporations, 47 municipalities and 59 NACs on March 24. The counting of votes will be held on March 26.
