While allegations of demanding and accepting bribe by police officials are not new, a cop in Odisha’s Keonjhar district has been accused of taking 2 kg of fish under the table to rescue an abducted minor girl.

The allegations have been brought against the sub-inspector (SI) of Anandpur police station by a family from the locality.

As per report, parents of a minor girl from the area had approached the local police station on March 5 alleging that she was abducted by a youth of a nearby village. Acting on the allegations, the police had launched a probe.

Meanwhile, the SI of the police station allegedly demanded Rs 5,000 from the girl’s father and assured to rescue her within two days. Though the girl’s father has not paid the bribe, he confirmed that he has given 2 kg of fish to the cop.

“The SI had called us to the police station to hand over our daughter. When we arrived at the police station, the police officer said he has traced our daughter within two days as per promise and demanded Rs 5,000. I have given 2 kg fish to him,” Bidyadhar Jena, father of the minor girl, said.

Anandpur sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) has confirmed that the minor girl has been rescued but dismissed the allegations of bribe against the SI.

“After preliminary inquiry, we have rescued the girl. However, the person against whom the family had brought the abduction allegation is yet to be nabbed. He is absconding and a manhunt is on to trace him. He will be punished as per law,” Anil Beuria, Anandpur SDPO said.

“The allegations of bribe are completely false and concocted. The police have made sincere efforts to rescue the girl. However, the girl’s father has levelled false charges,” he added.
